The leaflets were found to be a hoax and not distributed by the government, although some believe there is a cover up. Many say it is the work of the Russians trying to stir up trouble, or of the Donetsk People's Republic. Both sides claim that it's not true, but with all of the conflict already occurring some believe it's a low tactic to turn people to one side or the other. It is also possible that this is the work of an independent group with their own agenda.
Who created and distributed these leaflets, and why? Even if this was a hoax, someone has threatened the Jewish people. To invoke the fear that another holocaust could happen is unthinkable, but someone has attempted to do so. They have stirred up old feelings and affected these peoples' lives.
This could be a sick joke or a sign of things to come. We can't sit back and dismiss what has happened or be misled in believing that this is over. The people who did this need to be found and appropriate action must be taken to ensure this does not occur again.
Could another holocaust happen today? Unfortunately, yes. Look at the current crisis areas today- Burma, Syria, Sudan, Libya, etc. Genocide is real and it can happen with the world watching.
It is true that action would likely be taken early in Ukraine if Jewish people were attacked and genocide probably will not occur, but the world watching may not prevent the beginning of it. Tensions in Ukraine and Russia are high, and the threat is possible.
So, what can we do? For one thing, stay informed. Don't run with misinformation and spread it to your friends. What is happening is something to be taken seriously, but spreading panic is not the way to 'help' anyone.
If it is proven that there is reason for concern and action should be taken, urge your politicians. Push them now for change in other countries that are falling apart. There are millions of people in this world who need help and they are being ignored.
There are events that have occurred throughout history that we cannot repeat. We have to look at the reasons for the events that have happened and do what we can to fix those issues. Fear and misunderstanding lead to hate, and hate has proven to lead to terrible acts.
