So far, police have found that 53 girls have escaped and possibly more.
The apparent leader of the Boko Haram released a video yesterday and he says he will sell the girls. Whether being sold into marriage or into the sex trade, these girls are in grave danger.
Reportedly the United States and the UK are getting involved. They are both providing intelligence support and Special Forces. The international help is positive, but every minute counts. There is no way to know what condition the girls are in or what is happening to them.
To make matters worse, this terrorist group is not stopping. They said they will continue to attack schools and abduct more girls. Another 8 girls were taken Monday night.
Why should this matter to you?
The Boko Haram is not a new group, or one that just recently started taking drastic measures. The insurgency has lasted for the past 5 years, claiming more than 4,000 lives. Abducting the girls was not a random act and only a part of what has been happening.
This group has been terrorizing the region for a long time. Many people have lost their lives, and the cost to those left is devastating. Communities are living in fear of what could happen to them. They do not trust their own government or authorities. When the Boko Haram raided the school last month, they were wearing government uniforms and told the girls they were being taken somewhere safe.
This is a very big issue and one that deserves national attention. The terrorist group has been active for far too long and action needs to be taken immediately.
