Hunger is a largely overlooked problem in the United States. In 2014, approximately 48.1 million people were living in food insecure households. Food insecure means that they lacked access to adequate nutrition within the year. Many factors contribute to hunger, such as homelessness, but did you know that 2/3 of families that are food insecure have at least one working adult, usually full-time?
C.A.S.E.- Communities Against Starvation Everywhere- is a social enterprise that is tackling the hunger issue. They offer a line of healthy snack bars that serve a greater purpose. When you purchase a bar through them, they match your purchase and donate another bar to a food program of your choice.
Who are they?
C.A.S.E. was founded by Mark Ryan, Sara Ryan and Alex Nava. Mark worked at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank throughout his childhood, helped improve two food programs in high school, and was a founding board member of the University of Arizona Campus Pantry. Alex had his own organization called Bear Down Against Hunger and worked with Stop Hunger Now to feed people in Africa. Together, Mark and Alex helped to provide 40,000 meals each year. Now they are pushing ahead with the C.A.S.E. Bars Foundation to tackle hunger and homelessness at home, starting with Arizona.
How does it work?
Visit the C.A.S.E. Bars website and shop for your favorite snack bar. You can choose from Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter & Chocolate, or Raspberry White Chocolate. If you can't decide, there is a variety pack option. All snack bars are gluten-free with some options being dairy-free and Kosher- friendly. The ingredients are minimal and as healthy as it gets!
C.A.S.E. bars are available online in packages of 12 for $32. So, when you purchase a package, 12 bars will be donated to a food program that you get to pick. Donations are added up at the end of each month and deliveries are made quarterly to each food program on the list. It's a win-win for anyone that loves food and wants to make an impact!
You can also purchase a shirt to show your support of their organization and the profits will provide 12 meals.
What's in the future?
The founders have big plans for the future of C.A.S.E. and the snack bars are just the beginning. In the immediate future, the plan is to get 15,000 bars to food programs by the end of this year and add new meal replacement bars to the shop. They are also working on a water line, which will work just like the bars with bottle for bottle donated. Lastly, they are working on building more homeless shelters and communities to give people a place to go.
Overall, C.A.S.E. has a promising future with three passionate and down to earth founders behind it. Their organization is 100% transparent and they have had a great start. To learn more about them, visit the C.A.S.E. Bars website.
